Overview
The Meskel festival, celebrated across Ethiopia, holds special significance in Lalibela due to its historic rock-hewn churches. Meskel commemorates the finding of the True Cross by Empress Helena, mother of Constantine the Great. In Lalibela, the festival includes colorful processions, chanting of hymns, and the lighting of a large bonfire called the “Demera.” Pilgrims and locals gather to witness this unique celebration, which blends religious devotion with cultural traditions against the backdrop of Lalibela’s iconic churches, making it a spiritually enriching and visually spectacular event.
